Amita Captures Satellite Crown

2019 FIE Satellite: Copenhagen, Geneva

Amita Marie Nicolette Berthier’s victory in the FIE Satellite Women’s Foil event in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a precious one. She had defeated Italian Elena Tangherlini 15-9 in the Women’s Foil Final on 6 October 2019 to clinch her first title at a senior FIE event – and her first win of the 2019-2020 international season. Amita, a former student-athlete of Singapore Sports School, also earned four valuable points for her Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification campaign.

Having ranked 7th after the Pools after winning five out of six bouts, the 18-year-old fencer steadily foiled off her opponents in the direct elimination rounds to secure a spot in the Final against 21-year-old Elena. She eventually won the coveted prize, going one better on her silver-medal performance at the same tournament last year, and beating 57 other fencers to it.

At the 2019 Trekanten International, a tournament organised in conjunction with the FIE Satellite: Copenhagen, post-secondary student-athlete Matthew James Lim Quan Rong (DBS Year 1) secured a Men’s Under 20 Foil bronze medal on 5 October.

Over in Geneva, Switzerland, post-secondary fencer Tan Weixuan (DSLM Year 3) and Secondary 4’s Simon Lee Renjie finished 7th and 13th in the FIE Satellite: Geneva Men’s Epee competition on 5 October.
