Fencers went head to head at the 2021 Singapore Cadet Challenge, and the 2021 Singapore Minime Fencing Challenge where student-athletes achieved 6 medals at each of the competitions. This adds to the 34-medal haul achieved at three age-group national competitions in November.

2021 Singapore Cadet Challenge

At the 2021 Singapore Cadet Challenge held from 4 to 5 December 2021, the U17 fencers won 1 gold and 5 bronze medals. Secondary 5 fencer Isaac Ong Shao En achieved the only gold medal in Cadet Men’s Sabre. Marcus Maximillian Tan (Secondary 4) and Josiah Wei Kai Ling (Secondary 3) tied in the 3rd spot in the same event. Isaac was pleasantly surprised to come in tops in the competition. He shared, “I was quite nervous about the competition because it was the first one for the year. So, I trained as hard as I could and I won in the end. That made me really relieved and happy.”

The following week, young fencers had a face-off at the 2021 Singapore Minime Fencing Challenge. Yet again, Sports School told home one gold medal, clinched by Secondary 2 foilist Nabihah Raiedah Mohammad Fadly. Nabihah had earlier clinched 2 bronze medals among the seniors and cadets, but was not satisfied with her results at previous competitions. She shared, “I realised I was unable to cope with certain situations and tend to lag even with early leads. I was not confident that I could do well for subsequent competitions but was encouraged to join the Minimes to close off the year. Following pep talks with Coach Shim and Coach Eugene, I felt more confident of the moves and strategies to attack or defend. The Minimes was to prove myself and to regain my self-confidence. I would like to thank all my coaches for supporting and coaching me throughout competition especially the semis, which was tough.”
