Swimming Strong In Honolulu, Hawaii

Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships 2022

11 Sports School junior swimmers were part of the 38 men-strong contingent who represented Singapore at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships 2022 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Jerald Lium (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 3) and Clydi Chan (IBDP, Year 6) were among the six representatives who were named the Boy’s and Girl’s captains respectively.

The competition, held from 24 to 27 August 2022, attracted world-class junior swimmers from countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States, and other non-European Swimming League countries. The competition was last held in 2018 in Suva, Fiji. The competition that was scheduled to take place in 2021 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Throughout the four-day competition, our swimmers performed well to finish in 21 final swims. In the Men’s team, Brandon Yap Yan Xi (Secondary 4), Jerald Lium and Sage Tan (Diploma in Business, Year 1) were part of the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team which finished 5th place in the ‘A’ Finals with a timing of 7:43.29s. Sage was also part of the team which completed the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay ‘A’ Finals in 6th place, with a timing of 3:29.72s.

For the girls, Clydi Chan and Elyza Melinda Mak (Secondary 4) were part of the Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay team which swam against the waves to finished 6th in the ‘A’ Finals with a timing of 8:42.38s. Elyza, together with Carol Rachmadi (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1), also took part in the Women's 4x100m Medley Relay, where the team finished the ‘A’ Finals in 6th place with a timing of 4:19.83s.

With a combined score of 70 points, the contingent’s overall performance in the competition put Singapore in 5th place, ahead of New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa on the leaderboard.
