“Age is just a number, maturity is a choice,” this quote from Harry Styles stands true as student-athlete Choo Yi Xuan showed maturity beyond her years and finished 2nd in the Dynamic two-way artistic category at the FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving in Laval, Montreal from 19 to 22 October 2017.

Yi Xuan who is only 16 years of age, teamed up with partner Kyra Poh to represent Team Firefly. The duo was the only female pair among the 22 teams and competed in the open category despite being eligible for the junior category.

Despite being the youngest pair at the competition, she did not let the pressure of the competition get to her and was determined to do well. Assuring herself that she worked hard for it and it was not the first time performing at such a high level.

Yi Xuan had finished fourth in the previous edition of the competition and coming back a year later had her eyes sighted on bettering her performance. This gave her the motivation while preparing for the tournament to be different in their free round, having a unique combination of both dynamic and graceful moves.

It was a hat trick of gold medals for Choo Yi Xuan after the Secondary 4 student-athlete clinched gold in all three events she competed in at the Australian Indoor Skydiving Championships on 18 and 19 August.

Yi Xuan showed her versatility when she and Isabelle Koh won the 2-Way Dynamic – Speed Intermediate event before she teamed up with Kyra Poh to take gold in the 2-Way Dynamic – Speed Open category.

Yi Xuan and Kyra then joined forces with Australians Dave Hyndman and Tayne Farrant to finish tops in the 4-Way Dynamic – Speed Open event and ensure she left Sydney, Australia with a perfect three out of three record.

Even more impressive was that this was the first time the 16-year-old had competed in three different categories in the same competition.

However, with the 2017 FAI Indoor Skydiving Championship coming up in October, Yi Xuan knows there is plenty for her to do if she wants to better her fourth place finish from 2016.

“This competition gives us a rough gauge on where we stand internationally, so we must look ahead and improve on our faults to perform better in our upcoming competitions,” Yi Xuan said.
