SSP-AUT Graduation

The month of February saw the third official graduation ceremony for the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Diploma in Sports Management and Exercise Science. In collaboration with EASB Institute of Management and Singapore Sports School (SSP), this specially customized AUT Diploma is delivered offshore in Singapore on SSP campus.

The Graduation Ceremony took place on 24 February 2011 at Quality Hotel. A total of 22 student-athletes graduated for the 2010 cohort. 12 graduates (55%) would be eligible for all 7 universities, including
NanyangTechnologicalUniversity via the official articulations established for the AUT diploma and the remaining students are eligible for 6 out of 7 universities.

AUT also conferred 3 awards to outstanding students that night. Top Academic Award was won by Desmond Boey (Tennis) who scored a GPA of 4.75 out of 5, the highest score obtained amongst all 3 AUT-SSP cohorts.

Top Sporting Award was presented to Sherman Cheng (Sailing) who has earned multiple accolades and Gold medals, notably the 2006 Asian Games, 2007 SEA Games, 2010 World Championships, and the most recent one being the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games in the 420 class competition.

Outstanding Student Leader Award was awarded to 6 recipients, Desmond Boey, Sherman Cheng, Kelvin Chan (Swimming), Mariam Shazana (Track and Field), Daniella Ng (Sailing), and Koh Ting Ting (Swimming) for their contributions and service to the AUT community and fellow students.

Sherman, who was also graduate speaker, addressed his class with a witty recap of their trials and tribulations over the course of pursuing his diploma and credits the Athlete Services Department for their support and his parents for their understanding towards his sporting career.

SSP provides multiple academic pathways to suit the academic needs of student-athletes and the AUT Diploma pathway enables optimal matching of sports training and development with suitable academic pacing and assessment, thereby allowing greater flexibility for out students to achieve academic excellence while pursuing sports at the same time.

The achievements of the AUT graduates, both on and off the sporting field, are indeed a good testament of what AUT Diploma pathway has offered to our elite student-athletes.
