Sports School To Go Under New Ministry In November, Lawrence Wong To Be New Acting Minister For MCCY

The Prime Minister, on 31 July 2012, announced the restructuring of the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Ministry for Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) and the establishment of a new Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). MCYS will be renamed Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and MICA, Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). The changes will take effect on 1 November 2012.

Singapore Sports School will come under the purview of the new MCCY with other agencies, including Singapore Sports Council, National Arts Council and the School of the Arts.

The objective of the exercise, as stated in the Prime Minister's press statement, is to enable the Government to provide sharper focus and achieve better synergy on social and community issues and in engaging our increasingly diverse society.

MCYS Acting Minister Chan Chun Sing and MCYS Permanent Secretary Chan Heng Kee will head MSF.

Mr Lawrence Wong has been promoted to Senior Minister of State. He will head MCCY as Acting Minister with effect from 1 November 2012, while concurrently holding the Senior Minister of State (MCI) portfolio. With immediate effect, he has relinquished his appointment of Minister of State (Defence) and moved to MICA as the Senior Minister of State. He will continue as Senior Minister of State (Education) until 1 November 2012.

Permanent Secretary (Education Development) Yeoh Chee Yan will take on the new appointment as Permanent Secretary (MCCY) on 1 November 2012.
