Sports School Hosts Tim Mathieson From Australia
Mr Tim Mathieson, companion of Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, visited Singapore Sports School on 23 April 2012 as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' spousal programme, during Ms Gillard's first official visit to Singapore as Australian PM.
Mr Mathieson was hosted by Principal, Mrs Deborah Tan. Mr Mathieson spent an hour touring the School, stopping by to watch the Badminton, Bowling, Netball, Shooting and Table Tennis student-athletes in training.
Inspired by the student-athletes, Mr Mathieson sportingly picked up a table tennis bat to spar with paddler Winnie Leow, exchanged strokes with shuttler Crystal Wong, and bowled with Timothy Theodore Tham and Iliya Syamim. He showed the student-athletes a thing or two as he held his own at racket sports and even knocked down all ten pins for a strike in his only attempt on the lanes.
Mr Mathieson also got to meet the Sports School's very own Australians - Swimming Academy Head Coach Barry Prime and Sport Psychologist Dr Jay-Lee Longbottom.
Mr Tim Mathieson was accompanied on this visit by Mrs Kay Iswaran, wife of attending Minister S Iswaran, and Mrs Joyce Teo, wife of Singapore High Commissioner to Australia Michael Teo.
