New MCYS Minister Visits Singapore Sports School

Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Sports, visited SingaporeSportsSchoolon 1 July 2011 - his first to the SpecialisedIndependent

School since he took office following the recent Cabinet reshuffle.

He was keen to learn how the Sports

School is run and the three hours that he spent there gave him the opportunity to engage staff and student-athletes, who generously shared with him their experience.

MG Chan saw how lessons were carried out in the Geography Homeroom and Science Laboratory. He toured the 7-hectare school which includes the sports complex - physical conditioning centre, swimming complex, indoor shooting range, athletics track and football pitch, bowling centre and Performance Enhancement Institute. He also visited the badminton hall and table tennis hall where the student-athletes on the School Within A School programme were training. Under this customised programme, the student-athletes trained with their National Sports Associations for the most part of the day and studied in the evening.

For an idea of how the boarders live for five days and nights in Olympus Lodge, the Sports School's Boarding School, MG Chan visited a couple of dormitories in the boys' block, the laundrymat and ate lunch in the Dining Hall - the same menu that student-athletes had that day.
