Kop Magic Comes To SSP
For many of these youngsters, it was an opportunity of a lifetime to experience the kind of training that the players at Liverpool Football Club undergo. What's more, Liverpool's goal-scoring legend Ian Rush and former Reds captain Phil Thompson were on hand to share a few tips with these budding footballers, and Football Senior General Manager S Varatha Rajan and Coach Abdullah Noor.
Ian Rush and Phil Thompson were suitably impressed with SSP's student-athletes in particular, Muhammad Muhaimin Suhaimi from Secondary 4B Ian Rush singled him out as "having the striker's instincts". High praise indeed from a man who is Liverpool's club record goalscorer with 346 goals in 660 appearances.
The football clinic on 17 July 2011 was organised by Liverpool FC's sponsor, Standard Chartered Bank, in collaboration with sport apparel giant, adidas, which is also a sponsor of SSP's Football and Track and Field academies.
Liverpool is on a tour of Asia, having played friendly games in China and Malaysia. The club stopped over in Singapore for a training session before returning to England.
Among the participants of the football clinic were youths from the Singapore Association for the Visually Handicapped and children of Standard Chartered Bank staff.
For the 19 SSP student-athletes, it was a chance of a lifetime to spend two hours learning from Ian Rush, Phil Thompson and the Liverpool coaches.
Saeki Osamura from Secondary 2C, was excited to be part of the football clinic and having the opportunity to meet the Reds' legends.
"Liverpool is a big dream for me. Today's session was very enjoyable. The coaches were organised and I picked up some tips from the very coaches that coach the players from the club," said Saeki.
