36 For Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship
36 Singapore Sports School student-athletes received a big boost to jumpstart their fledging athletic careers as a result of the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship. This scholarship, amounting to $2,000, will help defray the cost of their educational and training needs. It serves as an encouragement to them, a reward for their sacrifices made, in time and effort, towards sporting excellence.
This scholarship, thanks to a $10 million donation by one of Singapore's richest man, is aimed at helping promising young athletes with financial constraints achieve their sporting dreams. Open to all Singapore citizens below the age of 25, the criteria for this scholarship include sporting achievements, good character record, participation in age-group, youth or national competitions and showing potential for high performance training in sports.
Besides these 36 student-athletes, four Singapore Sports School alumni also met the Singapore Olympic Foundation's stringent selection criteria. They are - trackers Calvin Kang and T. Haarishankar, bowler New Hui Fen and badminton player Ngo Yi Chye. Calvin and Hui Fen were awarded the High Performance Scholarship, which amounts to $10,000.
A total of 670 applications were received and eventually, 189 athletes were award the scholarship. The tenure of the scholarship is one year, applicable for renewal annually.
