Yi Xuan Flies Faster, Higher

2018 FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving

They finished runners-up in the Dynamic 2-Way event at the 2017 FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving in Quebec, Canada. That defeat only served as motivation for Singapore duo Choo Yi Xuan and Kyra Poh to capture the world title in the same event one year on. The pairing of Yi Xuan and Kyra, also known as Team Firefly Singapore, edged out their French competitors to claim the title of World Champions at the third edition of the championships in Zallaq, Bahrain, from 25 to 28 October 2018.

Yi Xuan, a Singapore Sports School student-athlete, and Kyra were ranked first after the three qualification rounds, twirling with ease into the Final against France’s Team Aerogravity on 28 October 2018. Both teams ended in a tie during the final which comprised one Speed and one Free rounds, resulting in a tie-breaker Speed round. Team Firefly, the only all-female pair at the competition, clocked 56.830s in the decider to beat the Frenchmen by just 0.77s.

Yi Xuan also won a second medal – a silver – in the Solo Freestyle Junior event, trailing American Kaleigh Wittenburg by 0.6 points.

In June 2018, Yi Xuan had obtained two licenses in outdoor skydiving – the Accelerated Freefall and Skydiving “A” – to expand her array of skills in the sport and also to complement her abilities in the enclosed wind tunnel.
