Tie-Broken Lucius Settles For Third

2019 Philippine Amateur Open Golf Championship

It was a nerve-wracking conclusion to the 2019 Philippine Amateur Open Golf Championship as the Men’s Division competition ended in a three-way tie. Lucius Toh Zheng Xian entered the final play-off for the Championship Trophy after tying on 14-over 298 strokes at the end of four rounds. Unfortunately, a bogey in the first of a two-hole playoff put him out of the running for the title and placed him 2nd Runner-Up.

The competition began well for Lucius, carding 71 strokes for par on Round 1, to take an early lead in the tournament in Cavite, Philippines, from 3 to 6 January 2019. Despite a disappointing 12-over 83 strokes which cost the Singapore Sports School alumnus the lead as he slipped to 7th place after the second round, Lucius managed to bounce back in the subsequent two days to record best gross scores in both rounds, and was the only competitor to achieve par on two occasions in the tournament in Rounds 1 and 4.

Competition between Lucius and his two closest rivals – Japanese Gen Nagai and Thai Vanchai Luangnitikul – was tense on the last day of the tournament, as the top three golfers tied on stroke count after several times during the round. Lucius slipped to third after a double bogey on Hole 12, but slowly regained momentum with birdies in Holes 14 to 16, to even scores with his opponents. All three golfers shot equal strokes on their final three holes to complete the 72 holes tied, resulting in a playoff.
