Strong Finish Lifts Nicole 'A' Crown

2018 Pondok Indah International Junior Golf Championship

Nicole Mok Shue Ying went from strength to strength in her final competition as a Singapore Sports School student-athlete to take home the champion trophy at the 2018 Pondok Indah International Junior Golf Championship on 20 December 2018.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 2018 graduand overcame a dismal start in the Under 18 tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia, after hitting nine-over 81 strokes in Round 1 to place sixth on the leaderboard on 17 December. Nicole followed with a second-round highest of four-over 76 strokes which propped her up to joint-fourth, before finishing strong on even par to rank second overall. Her three-day combined score of 13-over 229 strokes tied her with Indonesia’s Nathania Damarisa Rim. Fortunately, Nicole’s stronger final round, compared to Nathania’s 73 strokes, and give the former the Girls “A” Division title.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old golfer Aidil Nor Amani Norazman delivered consistent performances across the three rounds to earn the Third Runner-Up title in the Boys “A” Division. Aidil maintained his fourth-place standing throughout the tournament for an eventual six-over 222 strokes (74, 73, 75), just missing out on third place by one stroke.

Post-secondary student-athlete Justin Kuk Zheng Zhong, Sports School’s other golfer in the same age category, began the competition ranked sixth on 75 strokes after the first round. However, his consistent subsequent rounds of 75 and 74 strokes was insufficient to earn him a podium spot and he finished eighth on eight-over 224 strokes.

The Pondok Indah International Junior Golf Championship is a prestigious event on the Junior golf calendar, and the 2018 edition was a successful inaugural partnership with the Junior Golf Tour of Asia to boost the competitive scene in Asia.
