While some of our student-athletes were enjoying their first weekend of the June school holidays, Singapore Sports School’s fencers had an early start to their day. Fencing Academy student-athletes made an appearance at the 2018 Singapore Junior National Fencing Championships to pit their skills against peers in their age-group. They rose above the challenge of their competitors to win 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals at the OCBC Arena from 26 to 27 May 2018.

The Women’s Sabre Individual Final was an exciting one as Lee Kar Moon and Nicole Wee Sher Tynn battled for the coveted gold medal. Both national fencers – post-secondary student-athletes in their final year of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and classmates for the third year – were hungry for the title.

Leading up to the final, Kar Moon showed consistency in her bouts from the Pools to elimination rounds. Kar Moon maintained her lead in the field of 23 Sabreurs throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, Nicole experienced a shaky start to the competition but eventually improved her ranking from third after the pools to finish in runner-up position after an intense final against her schoolmate.

Both girls were able to benefit from the tutelage of visiting coach Lee Shin Mi from South Korea. During Shin Mi’s six-month coaching stint at the Sports School, the two-time Olympian’s wealth of competitive experience and varied training programmes helped fencers raise the quality of their game.

Other gold medallists include Secondary 3 student-athlete Yu Sihan (Women’s Epee) and DSLM Year 2’s Fong Zheng Jie (Men’s Sabre).
