Lessons From The Champions: Kimberly Ong Li Ling and Maximillian Ang Wei

“No journey is smooth-sailing. I’m sure many of you would have gone through struggles. However, if I had chosen to give up at any point in time during my struggles, I would not be standing here. I feel like my story serves as evidence that hard work will eventually pay off, even if it does not seem like it at the moment. Anyone can achieve what I have with the right amount of perseverance and determination, and most importantly, don’t be afraid to fail because what comes after a failure is an improved version of yourself who will be ready to take on even greater challenges in life.”

These wise words summed up wushu exponent Kimberly Ong Li Ling’s sharing during assembly as part of the Lessons from the Champions programme.

Kimberly has been tasting success recently. In May, she won a gold medal in Wushu at her debut SEA Games outing in Hanoi, Vietnam. She attained a perfect score for her International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme last year.

While it has been an astounding few months for Kimberly, who has become a poster girl for being successful in sports and academics, it was not all rosy for her. She faced several setbacks in her sporting journey and studies but has fierce determination to navigate the challenges and achieve what she set out to do.

Through her candid sharing, she wants to encourage student-athletes to strive toward excellence, and she hopes to make a difference to them. She said during her talk, “I hope you can all start working towards your goal and not be afraid to work hard and push through anything to get to where you want to be. I believe in all of you, and I will continue to work hard together with you to become the best version of ourselves that we can be proud of in the future.”

Earlier in the month, swimmer Maximillian Ang Wei, a Sports School star athlete at the SEA Games, was invited to speak to student-athletes following his excellent outing at the 31st SEA Games. He won five medals, and broke a SEA Games record and two national records. One of the key takeaways from his sharing was that discipline and a focused mind are key to achieving goals. The Lessons from the Champions programme is a series of talks by student-athletes, alumni, or external speakers to inspire and motivate student-athletes through personal sharing of their experiences.
