The National Kyorugi Championships may not have gone as well as he planned, but Brandon Low Sze Sheng (Liu Xishen) is not letting his experience at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall demoralise him.

Instead, Brandon is choosing to focus on the positives, and treat his defeat by Xavier Lau in the Kyorugi Male U37kg Poom Belt category as a learning experience.

“It was the first time I faced an opponent who could perform a reverse kick to the head, so I was not able to withstand the force as well as I would have liked. Nonetheless, I am now better equipped to face such opponents in the future,” Brandon said.

A month later, the Secondary 1 student-athlete took part in the People’s Association-Singapore Taekwondo Federation Taekwondo Championships where he won 1 gold and 2 silvers.

The 13-year-old continued to display his strong Poomsae form when he clinched the Individual Cadet 2nd and 3rd Poom Belt event at the tournament on 8 and 9 October 2016.

He also added 2 silvers from the Cadet Male Poom Belt Match and the U14 Family of Two event.

Brandon Low Sze Sheng (Liu Xishen), Singapore Sports School’s first Taekwondo student-athlete, won a silver and a bronze at the 2016 National Schools Taekwondo Championships at Toa Payoh Sports Hall from 18 to 20 April 2016.

The 13-year-old secured his silver in the Kyorugi “C” Division Male Poom Belt U38kg Class despite a 2-7 loss to Dyllan Neo of School of Science and Technology, Singapore. His bronze came from his Poomsae routine in the “C” Division Male Poom Belt competition. The two medals made him the top Secondary 1 boy in this category. Indeed, Brandon’s medals will be a boost to his confidence as he prepares for the National Taekwondo Championships in June.
