Stefan Lands Loughborough Scholarship

Stefan Tseng Ke Chen is the latest university scholar among Singapore Sports School’s alumni. He has been presented with a sports scholarship by Loughborough University where he is studying Human Biology.

Stefan, 23, graduated from the Sports School in 2007, the second cohort from the fledgling school to do so.

When Stefan was a student-athlete at the Sports School, he became the first Singaporean to win the Under 17 Triple Jump event at the United Kingdom Amateur Athletic Association Age-Group Championships. His leap of 15.18m broke the Championship Record of 14.87m and bettered the British Under 20 Record of 15.07m. He was then 16 years old when he became the first Singaporean to leap beyond 15m and until today, no one in Singapore nor the UK has come close to his eight-year-old Under 17 record. Stefan went on to win the gold medal in the same event in the same championships meet another two times – in 2007 and 2008, in the Under 20 category.

Stefan is now a senior athlete, having competed in three Southeast Asian Games in 2007, 2009 and 2011, and was nominated by the Singapore Athletic Association for the London 2012 Olympic Games following a leap of 15.87m during a qualifier in July 2011. On record, his best jump – as listed by Singapore Athletic Association – is 16.04m (-1.3 m/s), achieved at a meet in Paroi, Malaysia, on 26 April 2009.

At the Sports School, Stefan trained under Dr Valeri Obidko. In 2005, at 15, he broke the Singapore Under 17 Triple Jump Record twice. In 2007, he won the Asean Schools Triple Jump gold medal in Jakarta, Indonesia, and finished 4th (15.54m) at the World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic; in 2008, he was 4th (15.78m) at the Asian Juniors Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Stefan is the 14th alumni from the Sports School to receive a university scholarship.
