Sophomore Jazreel Tan Shines In Wichita

The Shocker Bowling Programme has produced a record 14 Academic All-Americans this year. Since Academic All-Americans began in 1990, the Shocker Bowling Programme has produced 98, which is more than any other programme in the United States of America. An Academic All-American is a student-athlete who carries a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.

From among the eight bowlers that made the distinguished list from the selected team, Sophomore Jazreel Tan also received the High Academic honour.

"The coaches are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes in the classroom," said Shocker Head Coach Gordon Vadakin. "It has long been our belief that great athletes are first great students."

Although the demands of competition, practice, travel and the various other aspects of being a student-athlete can be demanding, Shocker Bowlers' success in the classroom can be attributed to the emphasis placed on academics by the coaching staff. Wichita State University Bowling requires all athletes to carry a 2.25 GPA, while the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Collegiate requires only a 2.00 minimum GPA to participate in collegiate bowling.

While Shocker Bowling consistently pushes its athletes on the lanes, academics and graduation are the top focus as Wichita State bowlers are true student-athletes that succeed in all aspects of the term.
