P6ers Get A Taste Of Life At Sports School

The Primary School Leaving Examination is over. Time for fun! This was just what 86 Primary 6 pupils had at Singapore Sports School's P6 Celebration Camp from 18 to 19 October 2011. But more than fun, they also had a taste of what life is like at the Sports School - participating in morning training, School Assembly and the send-off ceremony for 47 student-athletes and alumni heading to the 26th Southeast Asian Games.

The first stop was Sentosa, where the P6ers learnt teamwork and bonded over a series of activities such as beach soccer and a telematch. They soaked in the sun, played in the sand and certainly had a whale of a time. Despite spending an entire activities-filled day out at Sentosa, their enthusiasm level did not waver because they were looking forward to the second part of the day's programme - the 26th Southeast Asian Games send-off ceremony for 47 student-athletes and alumni. They were going to meet their sporting heroes and this was enough to light up their eyes and bring a big smile to their sun-kissed faces.

Their enthusiasm shone through as excitement turned into fever-pitch when their sporting heroes went on stage to be honoured. They cheered and some exclamations could be heard: "Wow! Tao Li won 15 gold medals at the Sea Games!" "Hey, that's Pang Xue Jie. Cool man!"

Each of Sea Games-bound athletes was introduced to the P6ers before the start of the ceremony and after the event, they mingled over dinner. It was then that the P6ers got up-close and personal with their heroes, breaking the shy barrier and presenting each athlete with Good Luck postcards.

The P6ers began Day 2 training with their respective sport academies before joining the School for morning assembly, during which Module Awards were presented to the top three scorers for the various academic subjects. They saw that just as sports successes are recognised, so too academic achievements are applauded.

Morning assembly was followed by teambuilding games such as frisbee and modified handball.

Time flies when you are having fun and the P6 Celebration Camp drew to a close but not before infecting the P6ers with a renewed sense of enthusiasm towards Sports School. As they left for home, the P6ers will no doubt recall fondly the previous evening's encounter with their sporting heroes and dream of the day they can be just like them. For now, joining the School will be a good way to start their journey to become Learned Champions with Character.
