SOF-Peter Lim Sports Scholarship Boost For 100 Student-Athletes, Alumni

Singapore Sports School student-athlete Liang Xiaoyu has been awarded the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Sports Scholarship in the High Performance category for the second consecutive year. This Scholarship will support the needs of the national shuttler, who won the 2012 Singapore National Badminton Championships Women’s Singles title, to a tune of up to $10,000.

“When I compete in overseas tournaments, I have more opportunities to play against the best players in the world and that will help to bring up my game. This Scholarship is especially useful as it helps defray my overseas expenses during competition. I also use the money to purchase new badminton shoes, rackets and strings, as well as training apparel. This Scholarship has really helped in my development as an elite athlete”, said Xiaoyu.

Besides Xiaoyu, 13 Sports School alumni members received the High Performance Award, including sprinter Calvin Kang Li Loong and bowler New Hui Fen, who have received it for three straight years since the Scholarship was set up in 2011.

This year, a total of 100 Singapore Sports School student-athlete and alumni were awarded the SOF-Peter Lim Sports Scholarship. Fifty-eight Sports School student-athletes, out of a total of 154 recipients, were awarded the Scholarship in the Secondary category; 28 Sports School alumni were recipients in the Tertiary category. They received their Scholarships from Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council on 1 July 2013.

This Scholarship was set up in 2011, following the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games, with the donation of $10 million from Mr Peter Lim, one of Singapore’s richest men. The aim is to help young and promising athletes with financial constraints to aspire to achieve their dreams and goals in sports.
