Lessons from Champion Michelle Kwan
On Monday, 10th January 2011, Singapore Sports School was honoured to welcome Michelle Kwan to our school to launch the "Lessons from Champions" series. In this series, we hope to share with our student-athletes lessons they can learn from Sports Champions which will motivate them and encourage them in their pursuit of excellence. Michelle is the most decorated figure skater in US history winning an unprecedented 43 Championships, including 5 World Championship, 9 US National Championships and 2 Olympic medals. In her sharing with the students, she spoke about the importance of resilience as she had been injured a couple of times but always came back with a positive attitude. She spoke about the importance of balancing studies and sport and how student-athletes need to be discipined. Sports School students listened attentively as she shared her own experiences as a student-athlete and her plans for the future. At the end, we caught a video of her performing her winning routine at the 1998 National Championships which earned her a record 15 perfect scores from the judges. Staff and students gave her a standing ovation as she took her leave at the end of her presentation. We hope that Michelle's presentation will inspire our students to follow in her philosophy: "Work hard, be yourself and have fun!"
