It was a tight and hectic February for Singapore Sports School’s Table Tennis Academy student-athletes. A day after the North Zone Schools Table Tennis Championships had concluded, 16 secondary and post-secondary student-athletes made their way to France for the 2017 French Junior and Cadet Open followed by the Swedish turn.

Sports School paddlers did well to clinch 1 silver and 4 bronze medals at both tournaments in the International Table Tennis Federation’s World Junior Circuit. They put up good performances and fought hard against age-group athletes from different countries to achieve podium finishes.

At the French Junior and Cadet Open from 15 to 19 February in Metz, Secondary 4 student-athletes Beh Kun Ting and Gerald Yu Zong Jun won Singapore’s only medal at the tournament by clinching the silver in the Junior Boys Doubles. They were defeated 1-3 by local paddlers Irvin Bertrand and Lilian Bardet in the Final on 16 February.

Moving northward to Orebro, Sweden, for the Swedish Junior and Cadet Open, eight paddlers continued their strong performance in the circuit from 22 to 26 February. Post-secondary student-athletes Tan En Hui and Zhang Wanling added a bronze on Singapore’s medal tally in the Junior Girls Doubles. The duo met the pairing of Maki Shiomi from Japan and Wong Chin Yau from Hong Kong in the Semi-Finals on 23 February but succumbed to their attacks, eventually losing 1-3. Current secondary 4 student-athletes Goi Rui Xuan and Wong Xin Ru also achieved a commendable Quarter-Finals finish in the same event.

Two days later, 3 more bronze medals were secured in the 2017 Safir International Tournament, a competition linked to the Swedish Open. Post-secondary student-athlete Eunice Lim Zoe and secondary student-athletes Goi Rui Xuan and Koen Pang Yew En managed podium finishes in the Under 18 and Under 16 Girls and Boys Singles, respectively.
