Jia Min Topples Giants For Singles Crown

2018 Yonex-Sunrise Vietnam Open

Shuttler Yeo Jia Min reclaimed the Women’s Singles crown in Vietnam on 12 August 2018, a commendable feat for a 19-year-old. This was the Singapore Sports School student-athlete’s second time winning the title at the Vietnam Open, her first victory in 2016.

Jia Min slayed many giants in the tournament from 7 to 12 August 2018. In her first elimination-round match, she turned the tables on Indonesia’s Yulia Yosephin Susanto, a World No. 59-ranked player. After losing the first set 23-25, Jia Min came back strong to win the next two sets with 21-16, 21-15.

Two matches later, the Singaporean met nemesis Deng Joy Xuan (No. 69). Jia Min had lost to her Hong Kong opponent in their last two encounters barely a month ago. However, there was no stopping Jia Min this time as she ended the game swiftly in 33 minutes.

This set Jia Min up for a face-off with Japan’s World No. 26 shuttler Minatsu Mitani in the Semi-Finals – whom she defeated 2-1 (21-19, 12-21, 21-13) – and China’s Han Yue in the Final. Thirty-five minutes later, Jia Min secured the top prize in the Women’s Singles, having defeated her World No. 37 opponent 21-19, 21-19.
